Black by Unpopular Opinion

Streams of consciousness independently flowing through roads of "wokeness" less traveled.

Black by Unpopular Opinion is a podcast conceived after many long hours over the years of profound discussions --and sometimes heatedly debating-- between one another topics that concern, enlighten, and affect us on a daily basis. We recognize that voices like ours are needed in today's societal climate: voices concentrated on the singular objective of achieving equality and respect for every single Black and downtrodden individual on this planet, albeit trekking very different roads to said purpose--hence the origin of this platform.

This, however, doesn't mean that our main objectives in creating BBUOP will always result in dismal conversation.

As serious and often somber the conversation surrounding the plight of being Black and oppressed in America, --and around the globe--can be, our platform won’t be without lighthearted and enjoyable moments, mirroring another major part of our, and the entire Black existence as well. To be Black is to also be celebrated, resilient, and optimistic. We delight in friendly banter (and occasional PDA). Also worth noting: a multitude of our discussions are not and will not always be restricted solely to issues of race relations. Sports, entertainment, and literature, among numerous other topics will additionally be memorable components of our podcast.

We welcome ALL listeners. There is no audience unattainable and no mind unchangeable, including our own.

Phillip Barnes

Though his professional path runs through mental health, human behavior, and the deeper questions of identity, trust, and survival, Phillip has never been built for one-dimensional living. His interests stretch across faith, culture, psychology, style, power, and the kinds of conversations most people either avoid or water down. He brings a mind that is always turning, a perspective that is equal parts disciplined and discerning, and a presence that refuses to confuse societal noise with cultural depth.

A lover of Black thought (Both the rapper and the mental exercise), real substance, dry wit, sharp analysis, and saying what needs to be said, Phillip brings both weight and personality to Black by Unpopular Opinion. Thoughtful and subdued but never timid, direct but never hollow, he gives the podcast a poised, deep edge.

Whether he is calling out contradictions, pressing past performance, or dropping the line that stays with you after the episode is over, one thing is certain: he aims to bring something real. As Nipsey Hussle put it, “Premature certainty is the enemy of the truth.”

Although a current member of the Health Information Management & Technology realm, I engage in my extra-vocational passions for fitness & nutrition, mental health advocacy, and harness my eternal love for journalism (my former major during my beginnings in college before the surge in blogging and online information access).

A lover of my Christian faith, our 6 puppies, twerking, and general expertise, there is no stone left unturned in my personal arsenal of what makes me, me. Boasting proudly my world-famous (or infamous to some) Gemini birthright, listeners will bear witness to my Candisms, both sporadically and without warning.

My search is incessant for multiple avenues of inspiration, education, and change --even if that ends up being one mind-- even if it's only my own.
